First word

Hi, Dave here. Being a man I have to have the first word!

I am wrapped that Di is having another baby. Peter is such a great kid. Smart like his dad too. Of course Di would say its all that breastfeeding, but I don't know about that. We live just outside of Nelson. Bit chilly with all that snow about at the moment. Di knitted me a handspun woolie jumper from our own sheep. Man, is it warm. Only get to wear it about once or twice a year. Di's busy clicking those needles for our new one.
We have our own certified organic farm. We produce our own wool, have several beehives, have a herd of free range chickens, and have a large organically grown vegetable and flower garden. Di and I sell honey, spun wool, free-range eggs and vegetables down at the local farmer's market on Sunday.

We are Vegans, have been for awhile. We almost manage to live off the land.

Our midwife's name is Rosalind. Seems nice. Hope she will listen to our concerns, and help us with our choices. Next visit I'll give her some hive honey, to sweeten her.

Cheers for now, Dave

Cheers Dave
Sounds lovely that your farm is so bountiful.
I have a question. When I lived in a rural area, and was pregnant, our friends had the water tested before they'd let me have any at their farm.
Do you have to do that in rural NZ?
I am envious of the yarn-y goodness!
I love to knit and love the look of 'home spun'.

*pssst is it Bruce or Dave? check out the greeting and sign off*

Ophs, thanks for alerting me! :)
Local councils are responsible for the quality of the water. For a fee you can get your water tested. Often people here get their tank water tested.

Hi there, I’m Diana. I’m wrapped to be expecting number two! I’m so pleased that Dave is wrapped as well! I had worried that he might think it was too soon as Peter is only 18 months!
I am still breast feeding Peter and plan to continue until he chooses to wean himself, which I expect will lead to Tandem feeing once the new baby arrives. I adore the special time I have with Peter when he is feeding. It’s so precious!
We lead a very “wholesome” life growing most of what we eat or swap amongst our friends, selling the surplus.
Because we are so healthy, I really worry when I’m pregnant that I could predispose my unborn baby to possible allergies.
Rosalind, our midwife, seems very sweet, but she has only been practicing for 2 years. I’m not sure how many Vegans she has cared for, let alone tandem feeders!

Just put Peter down for his afternoon nap, time to find out more about Tandem feeding, I have just looked online for a local La Leche League group to see if there are any Mums who breast fed toddlers in pregnancy and continued to Tandem Nurse. I have left a message on the Nelson area answer phone.
I have just read a really interesting article about food intolerances and Tandem feeding. (http://www.lalecheleague.org.nz/articles/food_intolerances.htm). Very interesting, I must make a mental note about the red ear thing! The link to a breast feeding article was also “food for thought

While surfing, I looked into Tandem Nursing – starting with NZ sites. The page from Parent Centre was great! (http://www.parentscentre.org.nz/kiwiparent/tandemfeeding.asp)
Amazing that I will produce Colostrum again for the new baby, I was really worried that the new baby would miss out on the Colostrum if I already had an established supply. Wow, isn’t the body clever!

Following a link I found myself at Ministry of Health Website. It says that my supply might decrease in pregnancy, I wonder why? Also mentioned is diet. Stressing the increase in nutrient requirements, not really aimed at a Vegan though! Does make me wonder about my Iron levels and stores. I must remember to ask Rosalind about my blood results.

Must go now, I can hear Peter stirring and I still have some chores to do.

Good on you Di, for your awesome job with breastfeeding. You and Peter must share lots of special moments.

Peter may choose to self wean before number two arrives. The declining in milk supply, plus a salty taste, makes Junior look for more abundant supply. (less feds, less milk supply). Riordan, J.,Auerbach,K. Breastfeeding and Human lactation 2nd ed 1999.

You will need to eat very well, and you may need to take supplements.
Lots of rest goes without saying!

My little man self weaned shortly before his sister was born. I was okay with that. I was very open to whatever happening as far as tandem nursing... so it was not a big disappointment. I can only say from experience, but the little man kept sucking harder and longer in the hopes of getting some more out of me. My milk supply obviously did diminish *due to the new hormones running around? I'm sure you midwife/LL Leader can explain better!
The whole lets nurse until mummy produces didn't work for him, I just got sore, and dreaded his requests.
The one piece of of advice I got from a LL leader who was tandem nursing her two year old and newborn twins was that she prepared her daughter that 'the babies eat first, then she could have her turn'. That way she ensured that the babies got what they needed and her daughter didn't feel left out either.

That LL leader is a clear winner of an olympic gold medal for breastfeed!

I have search for the reasons why milk supply dimishes, but can find no explanation. Maybe it is the older child's reduction in the amount of actual feeds. Supply meets demands. That's my guess.

Hey yeah...good point! I'd at least advise boiling the water before drinking it..

Can I just say, that my son is still breastfeeding at age 2!!!
He has a full diet, but still loves to have a comforting breastfeed before nap time..I must say that I do enjoy the closeness with him. We have bonded extremely well. But I fear to my detriment, I have been quite ill this winter, so I am back on the lactation multi vitamin, I used to take.
