The B's

Hi there,
I have just being reading a previous post of mine where I say that there is no research that has a finding that tandem breastfeeding is harmful. I need to qualify that by saying providing the lactating mother's diet is adequate in provide all nutrients. I have been doing some reading and although not common, VitB12 deficiencies can occur during pregnancy and lactation.

Plant foods are not a reliable source of vitB12 for vegetarians. The B12 present in spirulina sea vegetables, tempeh, and miso has been show to be inactive B12 analog rather that the real thing. (NZDA Vegetarian Diets 2000 Positon Paper) It recommends supplementation or use of fortified food for vegetarians who avoid or limit animal foods.
Infants of vegan parents may suffer spinal cord damage and develop severe psychomotor retardation due to lack of vitB12 in the mother's diet during pregnancy. Breastfed infants of vegan mothers have been be reported to develop vitb12 deficiency and sever movement disorders. A vegan mother needs a regular source of vitB12-fortified foods or supplement that provide 2.6mcg daily.(Whitney, E.N. & Rolfes, S.R. 2002)

Loving the links in the post, Julia - great work.

Here's the next challenge for you - have a look on YouTube and/google video for a video about nutrition that you could either use as to teach midwives or show to women. Then embed it into a post.

Ros here,
Valid points here, however, by my objective and subjective assessments of her, and Dave, they're a smart couple, and I'm not going to wrap them in cotton wool! Ideally, I'd love to give her a great big juicy steak, but that's not my role here. I've already commenced her on a 24 hour dietary recall, and will observe.
Yes, I am a fairly "junior practitioner", and I am confident in my decision so far.

Vitamin B12 is stored within the liver for up to 5 years. As Di is a recent "convert" to vegetarianism, she should have some stores of Vit B12 there. "Reliable sources" of Vit B12 include meats (of course), poultry, fish, seafood, dairy products and eggs. I plan to discuss with Di and Dave the benefits of perhaps including, fish, seafood and eggs in their diet to perhaps boost their stores. Also, cereals, soymilk and yeast extract spreads, such as vegemite and marmite could be breakkie options. Furthermore, B12 supplementation is another option.

The article by Baker et al, (2002), interested me in the fact that during these pregnancies, Hypervitaminemic levels of folate, were identified throughout all 3 trimesters. Should we be encouraging intakes of other vitamins as well as folic acid?
And, B12 deficits increased during the late trimesters (2nd and third) due to the increasing demands made by the fetus.

Interestingly, Di also told me that Peter has dropped his afternoon breastfeed! Yay!

As Di is approaching the second trimester, and with her 24 hour dietary recall in place, I will observe for now.

Totally out on a limb here... when I was pregnant with my first hbac child. One of my midwives suggested a multi-B vitamin for post partum. As I'd been quite severely depressed after the first child and subsequent miscarriage. I am well aware that B6 and 12 are good for helping with depression.
I'd be interested to see if vegetarian/vegans have the same incidence of post partum depression as omnivore moms. *trying to be politically correct here... failing magnificently, but trying.
Anyway. Seem to have a grip on the English language again today. So I ventured to comment.
Another vbac baby for Canada kept me up all night with the mama! =) YEAH FOR MIDWIVES!

That Julia! She is a bit of a show-off in the nicest kind of way. Adding video, and now she has discovered gagets! She's desparate to embed another video on gestational diabetics, or her own personal choice of techno-rap music vids. gezzz

I'm so impressed about the quiz - a nice little learning tool. The only snag is: where do we see what the answer is?

Its a poll gaget. I think it is the percentage of who votes for the right answer wins! Just foolin around. Need to get a life!

sorry, up late with friend drinking wine... discussing whether it would be funny to ask the lovely New Zealanders I've taken to nattering at... 'so what is it like in the future?' in hushed tones.
Because as we all know... we here in Canada are in the past still.
Okay, too much wine. Time to stop.
Apologies now... will request taking this comment down tomorrow I'm sure.
Cheers.

Thanks for that! That's cool!

Hope you are appreciating a nice NZ white? or perhaps a good aussie red, like shiraz - has to be about 4 years old - at least!

Ideally from Victoria, Australia, - from 160 year old vines :-)

Yeah, in the future is cool! We only got electricity last year !! LOL, and we can't predict lottery numbers yet :-( LOL
