Rosalind's Visit

Dave here,

Had a good visit from Rosalind. She's good. Even got me and Di doing a 24 hour dietary recall!
I like a very through person like that. Makes me feel confident in her care.

She is a bit worried about Di having anemia, and has prescribed iron supplements. Given us some good ideas about food choices, not that we needed them really, as Di and I like to think that we are informed Vegans. Di keeps talking about not eating eating some kind of nuts, as the baby may develop some kind of reaction to them. She's afraid because she eats so healthy, the baby may develop allergies. Not to sure what that's all about.

What makes Rosalind think you have anemia?

Dave,

If any family members of you and Di, have allergies to nuts, best to avoid. Check out this link, quite user friendly to mums and dads.

Above is another site where you can find out a bit more about certain nuts. Just type in what you want to find out.

Cheers,
Ros :-)

Rasalind is great. She even gave me some recipe ideas. Tonight we are having Tofu, Pumpkin, Corn and Spinach Casserole. Tofu not only gives me iron and calcium but also is a good source of zinc as is corn.
Dave and I were really impressed that she had all this up to date research based info at her fingertips. Initially, we were a little concerned that she was a “new” midwife, but now we realize she is just awesome. Her advice is all evidence backed – we feel really comfortable with her.
The only downside to our visit is that Dave is now overly concerned about anaemia. I keep telling him that I’ll be fine! Pregnancy is a normal thing, not an illness.
I’m trying really hard not to need supplements. I’m snacking on pumpkin seeds, dried fruits and tahini – sources of iron & calcium.
Dave makes a wicked Kidney bean chilli – kidney beans now feature regularly due to their iron supply! We swapped from Lima Beans to Kidney beans as KB’s have more iron (2.2 mg/serve versus 1.3)
Regarding Tandem Feeding, the general consensus is that Peter will self wean before the new baby arrives. I do hope this isn’t the case, Peter is such a snuggly child – I would hate to think that he weaned in a round about way because we chose to have another baby!

She was very keen that we considered adding fish to our diet. As true vegans, this won’t happen, not to mention the concern about mercury levels in fish.

My 24 hour Dietary recall – I’m sure Rosalind will be impressed. We made iron rich choices whenever possible, eg: kidney beans & tofu.

Breakfast:
Oatmeal cooked with raisins, apples and soymilk
Wholemeal taost with almond butter spread
Chamomile tea
Dried apricots x 4
Dry roasted Almonds x 6

Morning Snack:
Wholemeal crostini with Tahini
Cup of tea with rice milk
Apple

Lunch:
Stir fried Tofu and vegetables (carrot, broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, onion)
Orange

Chamomile tea

Afternoon snack:
Anzac Cookie
Rice milk smoothie – with banana & apricot
Roasted Pumpkin seeds – handful
Chamomile tea

Pre Dinner:
Roasted Pumpkin seeds – handful
Dry roasted Almonds – handful

Daves Chili – Red Kidney Beans, tomatoes, garlic & chili
Broccoli
Broad Beans
Carrots and turnip mash
Rice
Soy Ice cream – vanilla

Bedtime snack:
Crackers & marmite

And of course plenty of water. we boil and distill all our water which is filtered as well.

I am limiting my tea intake to 1 cup a day - I've gone off coffee.

Having done the vegetarian thing for about two years, at different times, not in succession. I can attest to the fact that your body gets 'used' to the foods and you are less windy as it goes on. (pre-more than one child days)
There are days I'd like to go back to it. Alas, to do so in our corner of the world is a rather costly thing. We don't eat 'meat' every single day... which people find absolutely mind boggling!
